Poland Leads the Region in Energy Storage Profitability, While Chinese Demand Pushes Lithium Prices Up Again

August data shows that Poland's BESS market is still the most profitable in the region, while its Baltic neighbors and Romania are seeing sharp declines in revenue. At the same time, the global commodities market is showing the first signs of a lithium demand rebound – driven by Chinese cathode manufacturers restocking ahead of year-end.

01 · Energy Storage

Polish Energy Storage Systems Remain the Region's Most Profitable [1]

An analysis by consulting firm Clean Horizon, published in August, shows that Poland remains the most profitable energy storage market in Central and Eastern Europe. Interestingly, this holds true despite a slight dip in the revenue index for two-hour batteries – Polish BESS operators are making up for it elsewhere: day-ahead market spreads jumped by as much as 32 percent, and rates for system balancing services also improved. It's a combination that translates into real gains in return on investment for storage owners.

The picture looks less rosy for Poland's neighbors. The Baltic markets – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – posted double-digit declines in energy storage revenue. Romania was hit hardest of all, with revenues shrinking by as much as 35 percent. Clean Horizon attributes this mainly to a wave of new competition entering the BESS segment, which is squeezing margins across the local market.

For investors weighing a storage project in Poland, this is a concrete, numbers-backed argument – showing that local market conditions (spreads, balancing mechanisms) still favor profitability, even as pressure mounts elsewhere in the region. At the same time, Romania's example serves as a cautionary tale: a rapid influx of new BESS capacity can significantly erode the profitability of existing installations in a short span of time.

02 · Lithium Market

Chinese Cathode Makers Rebuild Lithium Stockpiles [2]

After a string of lithium price declines that weighed on the market for much of 2026, a signal of an upward correction has emerged. The price of battery-grade lithium carbonate in China edged higher, and investors responded by bidding up shares of the biggest producers – Albemarle gained around 1.8 percent, while SQM rose about 2.7 percent.

Analysts quoted by The Rio Times are tempering the enthusiasm, though: this appears to be the result of Chinese cathode makers tactically restocking ahead of year-end, rather than a sign of a lasting shift in global lithium supply and demand. In other words, the price move has more to do with factories' purchasing calendars than with any fundamental improvement in market conditions.

Still, it's a good illustration of just how strongly global pricing for this key battery-production raw material now hinges on individual purchasing decisions made by China's battery industry. For battery manufacturers and investors tracking raw material costs, it's a reminder not to read short-term price upticks as the end of the low-lithium-price era.

Summary

Summary

This week highlights two sides of the same industry: on one hand, hard regional data on energy storage profitability; on the other, a global commodities puzzle in which Chinese purchasing decisions can move lithium stocks on the other side of the world. Both threads – BESS economics and battery raw material prices – will be up for discussion at BATTERY FORUM Poland. Everyone looking to follow the energy storage and battery industry firsthand is welcome to join us – see you at the event!
